DESCRIPTION For most clinicians who were clinically trained in the past 20 years, the DSM has been the definitive guide for diagnosing pathology in our clients. Up until this point few of us noticed the evidence-base  behind our "mental health bible" nor considered alternative ways to look at human behavior, trauma, and treatment. When the DSM 5 entered popular culture in 2013 a push-back began --  specifically with personality disorders  -- which was one area with much controversy. So much so that they were included in the back of the manual, with serious concern if they would be included in future versions. This class will take a diagnostic look at how personality disorder categories and descriptions came to be in the original 1950s DSM up until today and  the research (or lack therof) around diagnostic criteria and treatment. This course will review a different  model to view personality  and how this impacts healthy vs maladaptive behaviors, that of the Enneagram tradition. The Enneagram refers to the nine different types or styles of personality, with each representing a worldview  that resonates with the way people think, feel and act in relation to the world, others and themselves. Similar to the Meyers Briggs but quite different in many ways,  it delves deeper into the core motivations, defense mechanisms and fears that often lie in the subconscious  of our personality.  This tool will be "tried on" as an alternative (and strengths-based) model of personality that many may find more empowering and clinically relevant. The Benefits of Home - Senior Care educational series is intended for healthcare social workers and case managers. Benefits of Home is a BSRB Continuing Education Provider: BSRB #17-004.
